XMetaDiss is restricted to online dissertations and post-doctoral theses. However, the specialist and institutional repositories and university servers hold a broader range of publication and document types, including preprints, essays and conference papers, which also fall under the legal deposit regulation.  XMetaDiss is inadequate as a delivery and exchange format here. It is therefore currently being expanded into XMetaDissPlus, which the BSZ has already introduced. It will then be possible to handle additional types of document by defining a vocabulary of publication types in the form of an XML schema. XMetaDissPlus is, however, backwards compatible, meaning that delivery in XMetaDiss remains possible.

XMetaDiss

Format of the metadata set of the German National Library for online dissertations and post-doctoral theses

To fully exploit the advantages of XML, a version of the new metadata format XMetaDiss has been released. The format is co-ordinated with the university libraries in Germany and other countries. The potential of XMetaDiss consists in the use of hierarchical patterns. In the creation of a format for online publications that is suitable for an automatic compiling-process of metadata by OAI protocol, and in the creation of a metadata format that is compatible to international standards. By using XMetaDiss, German online university publications can be retrieved by international metadata search engines.

The German National Library will accept the XMetaDiss format from the beginning of 2005 onwards. Since August 2006 XMetaDiss Version 1.3 is the relevant standard for delivering online theses and dissertations to the German National Library. This new version provides Dublin core metadata in unmodified form. Validation is possible with standard parsers like, for example, xerxes.
