XMetaDiss
Format of the metadata set of the German National Library for online dissertations and post-doctoral theses
To fully exploit the advantages of XML, a version of the new metadata format XMetaDiss has been released. The format is co-ordinated with the university libraries in Germany and other countries. The potential of XMetaDiss consists in the use of hierarchical patterns. In the creation of a format for online publications that is suitable for an automatic compiling-process of metadata by OAI protocol, and in the creation of a metadata format that is compatible to international standards. By using XMetaDiss, German online university publications can be retrieved by international metadata search engines.

The German National Library will accept the XMetaDiss format
from the beginning of 2005 onwards. Since August 2006 XMetaDiss
Version 1.3 is the relevant standard for delivering online
theses and dissertations to the German National Library. This
new version provides Dublin core metadata in unmodified form.
Validation is possible with standard parsers like, for example,
xerxes.
