Sheet music and sound recording collection
Since 1943 sheet music published in Germany is collected at the Leipzig holdings of the German National Library. From the 1960's onwards the collection was expanded by microforms and sound recordings from the former GDR.
Basis of the current collection are the publications submitted by the German music publishers and producers of sound recordings to the Deutsches Musikarchiv in Berlin following the "Law regarding the German National Library". After having been indexed at the Deutsches Musikarchiv one of the two legal deposit copies is kept for archiving and use at the collection of sheet music and sound recordings of the German National Library in Leipzig.
The sound recordings may be used by appointment in a special reading room that was adapted technically for this purpose. The reference library comprises of some 900 volumes.
